The natural ambience of a swimming pond in the garden is surely something special. Nevertheless the bathing zone should always contain clean, clear water in order to guarantee unclouded fun and hygiene. However each swimming pond is a unique ecosystem with its own individual laws. This creates special requirements for the operator of the swimming pond.
Each swimming pond is basically divided into two zones: a swimming zone and a natural zone. These should both differ from each other optically, which is why walkways or ornamental plants are often used as dividing elements along the border. In the natural zone, the plants’ natural cleaning process provides good basic water quality. Seeing as this is insufficient for hygiene requirements, modern pool technology has to take over the rest. The pump is key.
Water cycle function in a swimming pond
- The skimmer does the dirty work and is essential in any swimming pond. It permanently primes the water surface and therefore removes all coarse impurities such as leaves, blossom, grass and insects.
- The pump provides constant suction, leads the pre-filtered water through a pipe system in the filter unit and from there back into the pond. The filter unit or vessel filters out the finer dirt particles, organic substances and everything else that doesn’t belong in the pool water.
- The technology is housed in the pump housing or shaft. If the pump for your swimming pond is to be installed dry, i.e. above the garden floor, you will require a self-priming pump. This pump type is able to prime water up to 3 m high and can also handle air.
- Of course you can also install the self-priming pump below the water level, e.g. in a sunken technology shaft next to the pond or in an engineering room in your cellar.
You should consider these aspects during planning
- Swimming ponds can soon become a safety hazard and this should be sufficiently offset using all measures (enclosure, warning sign etc.).
- This is especially important for residential areas with a lot of children. Experience shows that small children in particular are magically drawn to waterfalls, fountains and water games.
- Even the construction is legally considered to be a safety hazard and must therefore be thoroughly secured right from the start.
You must also observe special safety guidelines for the construction and operation of your swimming pond! We recommend this publication from the Beuth series, which specifies the general safety and quality requirements as well as swimming pool test procedures for private use:
